Horizontal buttonhole

Ever wondered why the bottom buttonhole on a well made shirt is cut and sewn horizontally?

Shirts were buttoned into the front of trousers to prevent blousing and although this is no longer customary, Fine tailors will pay homage to this age-old tradition.

  6. funkypresident said: good to know. I had assumed that buttoning was a routine action, something you do by feel rather than by sight, and the horizontal hole indicated it was the last button to button.
