Anonymous asked: Love your style! Got a question, what do you think lined vs unlined suits and sportcoats? Do you think lined stuff well hold up better over time vs not lined?

Evening,

Thank you very much. This is an interesting question, and while i’d direct you to someone with a deeper understanding of suit/jacket construction (someone like Ethan Newton for example), who would no doubt provide a far more robust response, my two cents are this.

When a jacket is unlined, seams are exposed. This not only means a tailor must be more precise during construction as the seams will be visible to the consumer, but the exposure means - particularly when sliding a jacket on and off - seams are more susceptible to damage from wear.

This is generally why unlined jackets will be more costly to the consumer than one that is lined. This is also why half lined jackets have gained popularity - the jacket is lined strategically in places to minimise damage during wear, particularly when sliding the jacket on and off - without compromising the benefits of an unlined jacket.

Other things to consider would be fused vs canvased construction, when looking at how a jacket will hold up over time. But that’s another topic all together.

Hope this helps.
